I couldn't remove the metal insert - it will take some pliers and a lot of strength and may deform the palette, but I squished the middle ones down almost flat and was able to fit the final colour in. I use it for painting beaches (with Goethite though another yellow earth colour would work) and sandstone (with goethite and burnt sienna), for gum trees, for fair skin in portraits, to make the soft pastel greens of the gum leaves and for many building textures.
